Czech for Foreigners – přípravný kurz na certifikát z českého jazyka

Since 1st January 2009 it is one of the conditions for every foreigner applying for a permanent residence permit on the territory of the Czech republic to obtain a “Certificate Proving the Knowledge of the Czech Language”. The necessity to pass the language examination doesn’t apply to citizens of EU, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Lichtenstein and their dependents.

The examination institutions are to be found in all regions in the Czech republic. The examination is held throughout the year, even several times a month, and if passed, it can serve as a proof of the Elementary Knowledge of the Czech Language.

What should a candidate be able to prove in order to pass the examination?

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

What does the examination consist of?

• Reading comprehension (20 minutes)
• Writing (15 minutes)
• Listening comprehension (35 minutes)
• Speaking (10 minutes)
